The FAA sent the following security notice to U.S. carriers, according to a U.S. airline staffer who received the message directly:

“Last night a significant security event occurred on a US Air Carrier involving a validated jump seat passenger attempting to disable aircraft engines while at cruise altitude by
deploying the engine fire suppression system. The crew was able to subdue the suspect and was removed from the flight deck. The flight diverted and landed safely. The event remains
under investigation by law enforcement, no further details will be provided at this time.”

Audio between the plane's pilot and ATC:

YouTube

The pilot said the threat level escalated to a 4 when the incident was going on. Any pilots on here know how high that scale goes? Is 4 the highest?

Booking info (Emerson, Joseph David...who is an Alaska Air pilot):

https://www.mcso.us/PAID/Home/Booking/1573087?fbclid=IwAR1vOD1HhDStoFv541D9kkXbLa7xLII_RkKrtbY538Et1g5v1iIM_Ezsfbk

He's charged with 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment and 1 count of endangering an aircraft.

Reading the thread on airliners.net, they make it sound like some gymnastics had to occur to prevent him from pulling the levers.

I dont know if this is what a pilot would actually use though.

That doesn't sound ideal.

The flight from Paine Field in Everett to San Francisco was diverted to Portland International Airport where it landed safely. Alaska Air said in a statement the crew “secured the aircraft without incident.” KATU — KOMO's sister station in Portland — reported the suspect was an off-duty pilot.

Man, frick all that. I hate flying bad enough, but then to have some psycho trying to physically crash the plane. I would not have handled that well.

Also:
quote:

Horizon E175 from Seattle to San Francisco had to divert to Portland after the pilot sitting in the jumpseat inside the cockpit tried to reach both Engine Fire handles on the overhead panel, which would cause both engines to stop receiving fuel and shut down.

777, why do those things exist (I assume they are used when engines are on fire maybe?) and why aren't they a little less accessible?

a pilot riding on the jump seat does not mean he’s dead heading, or even with the same company

Scary. What’s easier for this guy to do, try to deploy the fire suppression system or straight nose dive a plane he would’ve been piloting? Either way, sucks that a guy like this is a pilot

I’ve got the cockpit voice recorder transcript from the FBI from that, it’s scary how close they came to losing that plane, a couple of times, also incredible how dumb the FBI is

Didn't even have to click the link. The guy had 2 or 3 hammers and a fricking spear gun in his bad! Trying to commit suicide and wanted it to look like an accident so payment wouldn't be delayed. He was about to get fired, I think.

fricked up both pilots, but they lived.
