I got approached about a job at NSU. It pays well and would be a huge advancement in my career. However, it is in Natchitoches and we don't know anyone there. In theory, I could take it for a few years and move back down here, but how bad would those 3 years suck?

Married with a 4 year old. We like where we live, and my kid has started school. Any advice?

Are you afraid of meeting new people? If yes, don’t take the job. If not, expand your horizon and take the job.

I'd move to Natchez in a heartbeat.

Beautiful town. Lots of inexpensive real estate.

Small town with nice people and lots of culture.

Great brewery.

Edit:

I evidently needed a cup of coffee before answering.

Natchitoches is a cool town as well, though not as nice as Natchez. I could definitely spend 3 years there.

Three years will be an adventure and worth it to advance the career. Do it. I moved to the desert for three years when I was younger. Unlike your option, I couldn’t just drive home on the weekend to catch an LSU game. You will survive.

Pros:

1. You get to move out of Scott
2. You are closer to Toledo Bend
3. It is a cool little town
4. You are farther away form Opelousas

Cons:

1. Don't know anyone
2. You are closer to Alexandria

Great small college town. Go meet some new people and make some money. Your child At an easy age to move so go give it a try and if it does not work out you move back

For only a few years, do it for your career and then get out.

You currently live in Scott? Natch-A-Trash is an upgrade plus cool Christmas parade. Couple of private schools like St. Marys for the kiddos

Basically equal distance to Houston, Dallas and under 3 hours to BR. Winning.

Natchitoches is a very welcoming town. You will know a lot of people before you leave in 3 years. Cost of living and housing is great compared to the Baton Rouge, Mandeville, New Orleans markets. There isn't a whole lot to do there but they have enough places to enjoy yourself.

Why do you already assume it’ll suck and y’all will move back?

Natchitoches is one of the better places to live in the state. It’s a beautiful town. Nice countryside as well. Medium-small sized so there are some food options. Shreveport isn’t too far away to get more of a city taste. Give it a chance at least.

Scott? Dude come on.

There are dozens of worse towns in La than Natchitoches. In fact, it might be near the top of a lot of peoples list to live in the State

If you're into outdoors and history, you'll enjoy it.

I live in Natchitoches and it has its ups and downs. The people here are wonderful. If you're married with a 4 year old, we're probably the same age range I would guess. Look into joining Natchitoches Young Professionals or the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. Both are great groups and a great way to meet people once you're here.

One of the biggest negatives I have about Natchitoches is food. If you are coming from South LA, you are going to be disappointed. Luckily, as somebody already mentioned, you're not that far from some great cities for weekend trips....Dallas, Houston, New Orleans. Shreveport, surprisingly enough, has come a long way on what foods they have to offer and is only an hour north.

The NSU community is great. If you're working in athletics I know all of the administration very well and you won't find a better group of people to work with.
