Spring of 1968, I asked permission from wife to be's father a week before I made it official with an engagement ring. He said yep I am glad you asked. I was 20 years old at the time and a second semester sophomore , chem. engr.,
Is asking permission still a tradition? 55 years later it was a good start for a lasting relationship.

Dealers choice from traditions.
I did not because she wasn’t chattel.

I asked 25 years ago
My guess is if my daughters current boyfriend would ask, it would be over text or maybe he would try and message me on Xbox Live

My father in law was asking me to marry his daughter.

I’d imagine if the father-in-law is worth asking, you should probably ask him.
I don’t think anyone expects someone to ask him if he’s a piece of shite.

I didn't.
Wouldn't care if my eventual son in law did.
Would probably just try to talk him out of it.

He was impressed.

That's considered out of fashion these days. Instead, young gentlemen ask the prospective FIL if they can make love to the young maiden.

I wish I would have asked mine.
He may have tried to talk me out of it.

Yes, have some class. Plus, one final chance for him to reveal their daughter used to be their son.

If you want them to pay for shite, yes, it's a necessary step.

You have the right to demand the father meet you at Sonic.

I met with my soon to be in laws and asked both of them for their blessing, rather than permission.
When the times come, I’ll encourage my son to do the same.

I called my now father-in-law, told him I had bought a ring, said a few kind words about both my wife and their family, and said I hoped we had their forever blessing.
We are in our 30s and I wasn’t going to ask permission, but my now in-laws had been good to me from the beginning, so I thought it was nice to give them a call beforehand. My wife was happy I did.
