Anyone have experience/knowledge about the best communities to live west of Portland? Yes, not my favorite place either. Just doing research for a family member that may move there.

No. That's honestly one place I have never had any interest to visit.

You are good to the west. The West Hills of Portland proper are the $$$$ areas and adjoining Washington County is great. Nike is based there.

Look across the border in WA for less political retardation (and lower taxes).

You’ve certainly come to the right place with this question.

Most people here are terrified of leaving their bubbles in Denham Springs or Youngsville.

If you keep going west, about 60 miles or so, you can live in a pineapple under the sea

Vancouver, Washington

A friend of mine lived there and he said that the best area around Portland. Its right across the river from Portland and its only 2 and a half hours from Seattle.

My boss lives in the burbs and its very pretty. They rarely go downtown except for a concert or ballgame.

Politics are shite there but it is one pretty place.

The most redneck guy I ever met lived outside of Portland. Made me watch hours long videos of his elk hunts. Not the actual hunt, him dragging the elk out to his old beater truck.

Solid dude.

Family member is in Coast Guard and will be stationed there. Just hoping to find an apartment in a good area. No kids, so schools are not an issue. So far, just googling around the tiny apartments are around 1400 a month.

Tell him that he’ll have to be prepared to drop at least $700k on a 1500 sq ft home

I've been wine tasting there a few times and can tell you that there are some vv nice communities outside of portland.

Each time we have been there we have thoroughly enjoyed our trip. All politics aside, it is a very nice area.

and the wines from the willamette valley are superb

If Camby is not too far away it might be an option. My siter lives there and I have visited a few times. Small town feel about half an hour from Portland. Portland was awesome in the late 90's but a crap hole now. I can't speak for schools.

I have a buddy that moved to Oregon about 7 years ago. He is as conservative as it gets. They moved somewhere southwest outside of Portland and he loved it. I just texted him to see how things are now. He did go into Portland to work but he could escape to the exurbs in the evening.

it really is a very nice area once you get outside of Portland.

so much to do, experience, eat and drink. I would live there if life wasn't tied to where we live now.

Portland isn’t hard, despite the negativity above. Way better than BR for example.

If worried about income tax, look across the Columbia River to WA, as there is no state income tax. No sales tax in Oregon, so good spot if you hate taxes and are willing to shop in Oregon. If not an issue, just about anywhere west of the Willamette River outside of the lowlands around downtown and east of the West Hills are good. Washington County, LakeOswego, West Linn, Wilsonville, etc. are solid.

Check out Orenco Station. Tech money keeps it pretty nice.
