Heading to hang with the wife’s family on memorial day. They are big southern baptist and frown upon drinking. In our 10 year relationship we have gone there every year for memorial day and the 4th of July and never had drinks. I’ve averaged 60 hours a week over the last month and I’m a man. I’m 40. I want to have a few brews. Was told I if I bring beer I’d have to keep it in the car and put it in a yeti cup.

Do I abide by the rules?

Or show up like this with a case of coors?

Follow the rules. Easier to just keep the peace in families like that.

Sounds like you will be divorced soon. No need to butter up to the inlaws now.

Ask the homeowner/parents, tell them you feel like having a couple drinks for the holiday and if they mind.

If they would rather you not at their home, then either don't go, or drink once you leave.

Grow up and show some respect to your hosts. If you can’t refrain from drinking for a couple of days, you have a problem.

My in laws are hard southern baptist. My BiL (their son) and I both drink beers together.

We don’t chug beers in front of them. We just keep them outside in the fridge or cooler. We pour them in yetis

We don’t hide the fact that we’re drinking beers. There are cans in the trash and they look in the cooler. We’re at my BiL’s house right now. I don’t do it at my MiL and BiL’s house.

It’s an unspoken thing.

Friend,

Life is better without alcohol, which is a depressant. It may fool you into submissive slavery by giving you a good feeling at first. Enjoy the time you have with your family, understanding that such times are a limited supply that one day will no longer be available. Tell stories, look at old pictures and scrapbooks, join in prayer and Bible reading, plan an almsgiving adventure. There are so many fun and fulfilling things you will be able to do together. Look for those things and embrace them and your family. Life is short and tempus fugit. Don’t let chemicals rob you of that gift.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Took you 10 years to stand up for yourself? Be respectful but that sounds terrible to enjoy your holiday weekend.

Follow the rules or don’t go. If you can’t do this for your wife, you shouldn’t have married her. Now if they were to coke to your house, you drink all you want.

You are right, you should be able to drink, but then you also have to respect their beliefs so the obvious thing to do is put your drink in something that doesn't look like an alcoholic beverage.

You are 40 and should be able to handle this situation on your own. You can put it in a yeti or another brand cup, etc. It all depends on what you drink.

But nothing worst than a family of Southern Baptist. What do they do for fun? They don't drink, they don't gamble.. Do they still not dance and shite like that? And I am sure they don't cuss and the topics of discussion are probably limited.. So that has to suck.

Let them frown.

You know how to keep a Baptist from drinking your beer on a fishing trip?

Bring another Baptist
