When did fast food pull up and wait become the normal?

This seems like a sign of a poorly run restaurant. This seems to be a recent development.
Burger King is terrible. If there is a metric tied to it, I'm sure corporate knows their gaming the system.
McDonalds has now built parking spots because they know their terrible.

I want to say you don’t actually have to pull up and wait if you don’t want to. You can wait at the window but they do this to show they are meeting their times when it comes to getting cars through the line

It seemed to start when window wait time started being a metric. Most used it to game the system, but it seems like corporate has embraced this approach.

I worked at McDonalds in 92 and we were doing this. So it's been around.

Burger King here in or area in Alabama is terrible. If you go to their drive through (when starving and abslutely every other place is slammed), you will probably run into these responses to an order:

The Taco Bell a block from my house was run like a well oiled machine. Got food in 30 seconds tops
I went the other day and the 16-20 year old white kids were now 350lb umm…. lets just say culture.
You could see 5-6 bags stacked up, and had no idea what they were doing.
They told me to pull up and it would be 5 to 6 minutes for an effin soft taco, drink and Gordita.
