The 123gr ELD-M for 6.5 Grendel appears to be a pretty good hunting bullet (despite being designed as a match bullet) based on what information I could find online. Has anyone on here had much experience with it for whitetail? If so, what kind of performance have you seen? Also, what barrel length and range?

I’m interested in this too. I just ordered a 6.5 Grendel for my son.

6.5 Grendel in my experience is a terrible choice for whitetail. Maybe for pigs, but only because wounding them & having them run off & die is completely acceptable for a pig.

So what’s your experience? What kind of bullet? Range? Barrel length/MV?

Your experience seems to be an outlier from what I’ve been able to find online… so I’d like to know why you feel that way.

Not judging I just think there is a dozen better calibers for hunting.

I have killed 2 deer with them. It does the job, but doesn't exit or leave a blood trail. Tried the SST with similar results. Have switched to Nosler Partitions this year, but haven't killed yet

The 6.5 grendel is a great round for deer. My son shot one at 120yds with mine and the deer dropped. Never took a step.
18” barrel. 120gr bullets moving at 2500 fps, if I remember correctly.

The ELD-M will most likely not exit. I would not use the ELD-M personally.

What range did you kill them with the ELD-M and what length barrel?

Less than 100 yds. 16" barrel Ruger American Ranch. The SST was about a 60 yard shot out of an 18" Sulzer AR. Of course, a neck shot is an instant drop dead..

I have used the eldm a lot alongside the SST. Mainly on pigs. It performed very well and I wouldn't hesitate to use it on deer
I have recovered from the same pig a SST and ELD shot from the same rifle build at the same distance. Both went through the shoulder at 200yds. Stopped under the exit side skin. Eldm retained more mass. Could be coincidence from 1 sample.

My kids have killed 2 with the ELD-M from an 18 PSA Grendel upper. One was a DRT 80 yard shot, no pass through - liquified vitals. The other was a textbook double lung pass through with a great blood trail. Deer went about 20 yards. Shot was prob 60 yards. I shot a big bodied cull buck last year with the 123 SST at 100 yards. Great exit wound and blood trail. Deer went 30-40 yards. This was from a River American Predator. I have also shot hogs this year with the 115 Barnes. Now this bullet really did damage and had complete pass throughs on big pigs. All worked well. I believe the Barnes monoliths are prob the best hunting option based on the penetration, controlled expansion, and accuracy.

Now the Grendel in general is a blast to shoot from both the bolt and AR platforms. I now shoot suppressed and it has the recoil and crack of shooting a 22. It’s easy to be accurate and the scope stays on target. I haven’t picked up my 30-06 since getting these for my kids.

No pass through, zero blood trail. My dad has one & he has lost every animal he has ever shot with it. He was shooting hornady sst which is great ammo.

The type of bullet has a big impact on terminal performance and a huge factor when it comes to weaker calibers… which is why I started this thread about the ELD-M. Most of what I’ve heard about the SST was no exits.

I bought some ELD-Ms to try out so I’ll post the results. I’ll probably try it out on hogs first though. I may switch to Nosler or Barnes if I’m not impressed with the results.

I’m curious to see how those partitions perform too.

The 6.5 ELD-M or SST’s have done the job for me and my kids. We’ve killed dozens of hogs with them and ground checked them most times. My brother killed a 250lb boar last night with the Hornady Black BTHP. He never took another step.
My son killed his first deer with the SST and it was piled up 40 yards away. That one did not exit.
All shots with a 10.5” AR suppressed pistol. 40-150 yard shots.

I use SST out of an Alexander arms 16”. Have killed probably close to 20 deer with it and can’t remember a single one I have lost. Sometimes no blood and sometimes lots of blood. But I feel it has to do more with shot placement and not the caliber.

This pig shot with the ELD-M is the only animal that left a blood trail. I really like the gun and the round, just gotta find the bullet for it. If the Noslers don't work out, I'm going to a Barnes copper next.

Buddy of mine shot eldm in his 6.5cr for a couple of years against my advice and killed a pile of deer and pigs and exotics with them. The first 5-6 we’re all stoned dead DTR and then one day he hit scapula at about 250yd and had to spend several hours to find a dead deer that ran 200yds with zero blood and barely went in past the scapula.
He’s shooting barnes now.
