Anyone ever run their boat down to the Dry Tortugas and fished before? Doing some planning for a trip in July and worried about making that far of a run without any knowledge of the area. Any advice?

Isn't that all a national park with no fishing?

NPS Site

quote:

Private boaters are required to file a boat permit at Garden Key before fishing within the park.

Be sure to follow regulations.

Think there's permits and such involved but not certain. Have been twice, both by seaplane just to snorkel around the fort.

good luck !

Had no idea you couldn't fish there. Is that true?

Looks like some parts are off-limits to fishing and other areas you can fish but need a permit.

Great fishing there and snorkeling. Here is a good site for specific requirements for fishing outside the off limit areas.

Went out there a few years ago and there were plenty of people wade fishing or fishing from beach. Didn’t see anyone fishing from Fort itself so that is probably off limits. Lots of snorkeling around the Fort. Definitely people fishing from boats.

Been to the Marquesas which are about half way, lots of shallow flats covered in grass just south of KW after that a bunch of areas of coral. Lots of wrecks out there, I assume there is some kind map card for ones gps that would keep you out of trouble but that coral is very unforgiving. As others have said once you get out toward Ft Jefferson there areas off limits to fishing and even just boating without the correct permits. Beautiful area I hope to visit again, the seaplane out to the fort is awesome.

I'd love to make that run one day. My boat is made for that area, going to have to do it at some point.

Man it doesn’t matter. Drop a Carolina rigged pogie up against the fort like it was a barge on Fourchon.
