Most definitely. I think dad kept them and Village Sports afloat.

Think they closed down in the early 80s , located in Monroe beside the Ouachita on South Grand Street.

I remember my dad and pow pow talking about Gene's. And dad would point out the old building when we would pass it downtown. I don't remember it being open though

I asked because i have a brand new in the box Lynch World Champ Turkey Box Call, with the price tag on the box.
It says Gene’s Sporting Goods $ 7.95

It was my friend’s dads call. He died a few years ago. Lived around Sterlington. Was a founding member of the old club called Iron Bridge Hunting Club.

Friend gave it to me because i turkey hunt alot. I gave him a big framed picture of his big Tensas buck . Had the pic made at Walgreens.

I think they made it to maybe the late 80's. I want to say I remember driving there a few times in my old Bronco and I turned 15 in '87.

Ran into Mike Benton the other day and we spent several minutes taking about the old Wham Brake days. He brought up Genes, which I hadn’t thought of in years.

I hunted with Mike a couple times out there.

As far as Genes, it closed around 86-87 if I remember, I had very little money but bought a couple things I never used that had Genes stickers on them with the price marked thru and new price in red.

After Howard Griffn's closed down, which Gene's shared the building with, they moved to a Cypress Street in West Monroe. Lasted a few years through the 80s until it finally closed for good.

Gene's, Village Sports, and Sutton's all did great business until they didn't, I guess.

Absolutely. Right next to "Howard Griffins land of toys, loads of fun for girls and boys, bring the kids and look around." I have a vivid memory of my dad taking me and my older brother in there and buying us each a Remington Model 1100. That was 1974 or so.. Loved that place.

Village Sports was the go-to place for most of the Northside Monroe guys since everyone was very loyal to Dick. Have fun with that statement lol. I imagine everyone had an account there like they did at Haddad's Clothing where dads and their sons could go run up small fortunes every month and get arse chewings by wives and moms. I imagine Dick had to threaten folks with Guido to pay up a bunch lol. Plus Rodney back in the day was the man for working on bows. Then you had Outfitters Ltd. They tended to have more shite and a better selection of guns but you felt like you were cheating on Village if you went there. Damn those were the days. I don't really remember Simmons really getting big time till honestly Village and Outfitters had already shut down or were danger close to it and then TP Outdoors got in the game as well.

I think you may be thinking of Howard Griffin's. I was a kid at that time and was always disappointed when we drove by and it wasn't Christmas yet (Howard Griffin's was an outdoor place except during Christmas time when it became "Howard Griffin's Land O' Toys"). There may have been another outdoors store down there but the only one I remember is Howard Griffin's.
