My '99 Z71 has a bit of a problem. Upon accelerating, it will go from 2,000 to 2,500 rpm and bog down. Then it will accelerate normal until about 3,000 rpm. And it won't go above 35 mph. So, how screwed am I?

Whatever the cost of another tyranny is. Rebuilt or brand new, you need another one.

About $1500 worth, seems those trannys are good for around 75-100,000 miles.

replaced two back in the day

Could be a catalytic converter or fuel issue.

This doesn't sound like a transmission issue.

Sounds like a fuel/air issue.

Start cheap.

Change air filter and fuel filter. Cheap the fuel pressure. . may need a new pump.

I thought when fuel pumps go bad, they completely shut down. I've noticed that when I crank it in the morning for work, I immediately put it in gear and go. When I pull out of the drive way, it bogs down for about 300 yds and it catches up fine. Also, the fuel gauge is completely useless because it doesn't work at all. Now that could be the sending unit.

I wouldn't write the transmission off just yet....what you are describing could be a whole lot of different things.

Had the same issue with my F150. Faulty spark plug wires ruined the catalytic converters. Fixed that an been fine for the last 4 years

Check to see if you have any codes. Im having a very similar issue and I was getting a b shift solenoid error. One of it symtoms is it put the truck into limp mode, i was having that bogging down issue.

I had this on a Dodge mini-van. A short in the fuel injector ruined the computer. Have your codes checks. Almost any good sized town has a guy who goes to the junk yards, gets popular types of trannies, repairs them and has them sitting, ready to go, can have one in your truck in half a day, well under 1k$ typically. But I dont think it's your trannie. Check with Scotty Kilmer or Eric the Car Guy, on youtube.

Fuel pumps go out slowly over time. The issue that you're describing sounds like the fuel pump is going out. I changed mine on my 2000 z71 last year at 190k miles. Not the easiest to change. Bring it in somewhere and they will check the pressure on the fuel pump. It's a common problem

Fuel gauge doesn't work on your truck because the float is getting stuck. Whenever you drop the tank and change the fuel pump assembly. The gauge will start working again

First, it's a '99 z71. Do actually think he only has 75-100k miles on it

Secondly, the transmissions on those trucks are good for at least twice that mileage. You'd have to really dog the shite out of your truck for the transmission to only last 75k miles

It's got 232k on it. But it came with all the maintanence paperwork including rebuilding the transmission.

Yep. However there's an easier way than dropping the tank. If you have a hoist available, remove six of the 8 bolts that secures the bed to the frame. Loosen the last two at the end of the frame and lift the front of the bed up with the hoist. This gives you plenty of room to work, and you don't have to fight with the tank or empty it. Also works for S10s, as well. It turns a 3 hour job into about an hour.

Ok well if you bought the truck used & the transmission has already been rebuilt, then yeah it might be a transmission problem.

But it still sounds more like the fuel pump to me. Have someone pressure test it. Then if they say it's bad, then either take it home and change it yourself (if you are somewhat mechanically inclined) or have it changed. There are youtube videos on how to do it if you need help. Just search "changing fuel pump on 1999 silverado"

At least by changing the fuel pump assembly, your fuel gauge will work again. I drove my truck for years w/o the fuel gauge working. I just reset the odometer every time I filled up. Truck would go about 300 miles per tank. That's how I kept track so I didn't run out of fuel

I bought a code reader. I'm afraid it's not gonna work because the check engine light isn't on.

That's exactly what I'm currently doing.
