I’ve done seven cruises with Viking, one of which was an ocean cruise.

There are a number of threads that have discussed this on the board. Here’s one I started a while back…

I just got back from my first Viking river cruise a couple of weeks ago. It was the one in Bordeaux, France.
It was fantastic. We enjoyed it so much we scheduled the Grand European cruise for next year.

I am going on my first one this fall. Doing Christmas Markets on the Rhine River. Basel to Amsterdam. Facebook has a ton of groups dedicated to Viking and other similar companies.

First time? I'd shoot for a cruise when the Christmas Markets will be open. Christmas markets across Europe generally open in mid-November and close around January 1. Magical time of year. The Danube Waltz or Romantic Danube.

Pro Tip: If you can time the first week or so they're open, it's cheaper than the first week in December when the prices go up.

Now..Many cruise line options. We love Viking obviously. They do everything right from the service to the experience.

But, we're looking at an Ama Waterways in France maybe next year for a change of pace. Probably a little more expensive. Depends on your interests in the included vs. optional excursions, which can add up. FYI, Viking offers a daily included tour and you can pay for optional excursions.

MOST IMPORTANT: Plan on some time pre or post cruise, particularly in cities like Prague. Coolest place in the world to me. Once you're there, it's cheap to take trains, planes or hire cars to get your around. Take advantage of it!

Glad to hear that . I have a Prague extension scheduled through Viking. We have reservations at a nice hotel that has been a monastery for centuries and is still a working monastery with monks still living there.

High on my list. I want to do a river cruise through the French wine regions. It’s heaven on earth for me.

Do it. You would love it. I just got back from the Bordeaux cruise. The boat does not go very far, and the scenery, while pretty enough, is not spectacularly beautiful like it is on the Rhine, Danube or Douro, but it does explore the wine region thoroughly.

One day was devoted to the Right Bank, the highlight being spending the afternoon in St. Emilion. The day we explored the Left Bank, we saw 4 of the 5 1st Growths, toured and had a tasting at a 3rd Growth and had dinner at another 3rd Growth.

You MUST go here!!

Ceský Krumlov is a stunningly beautiful town in southern Bohemia, and after Prague Czechia's second most visited tourist attraction. The historic center of the town was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1992. The historic center of Prague was inscribed at the same session and these were the first two Czech World Heritage Sites.
