Israel’s influence in DC is due to a couple of things.
One, you have a lot of Zionists in the government, I mean you have Brian Mast actually wearing an IDF uniform on the Hill to make a point, and that says a lot about what’s normal in DC these days.
It’s also a function of money, Israel bribes a lot of people in DC, that’s what the contributions are, they’re bribes. AIPACs predecessor was actually shut down because it was in breach of FARA. AIPAC is too, but they’re protected.
Finally, espionage is part of it. We’re Israel’s number one intelligence target, because Israel is a small country in a physically precarious position, and if you can persuade America, by whatever means necessary, including blackmail, that your problems are Americas problems, your security problems go away. The money and the resources you can harness are staggering.
This an old problem of empires, you get dragged into other people fights, the Athenians struggled with that.
People should be open and honest about it though. The Israelis have the most powerful lobby in DC, and that’s been true for decades. In some ways their influence is declining though. People are less and less persuaded that Zionism is a form of American patriotism. Which then leads to questions about how we’re spending our money. You can see that in the polling of younger Americans. They’re skeptical.
And nothing lasts forever too, 70 years ago the Taiwan lobby had this kind of power.
