Looking at some of the prices of electronic equipment back in the day, it's amazing how families had that kind of disposable money to spend on VCRs, tvs, etc.
This. I remember my Dad bought us a VCR for Christmas. It cost like $900

It’s true. Coca-Cola shirts were a huge deal, similar to Panama Jack a few years prior. Everyone had them.
I had forgotten about them until I started thinking about New Generation. I worked nearby and bought quite a few clothes there, including the essential Coca-Cola rugby.
They are insanely priced on sites selling “vintage” clothing.

She worked there for four years while in college, mid-80’s.

There was less tech turnover then. A TV prior to about 2000 was generally considered a multi-decade investment. The quality increase was evolutionary and not revolutionary and they could be repaired easily. If someone kept and maintained an early VCR it would likely still be working today. Compare that to TV's today, in the last 20 years our primary TV has averaged 3 years and over the last 15 years I have had 4 projectors and I am looking to replace the one we have this year. Each one of those TVs and PJs have been objectively significantly better than the previous one. Most people also didn't have 5 or more TVs in the house.
