Headed to Big Sky on Saturday. Some snow this week, but the On The Snow reports have been pretty bad... I guess we'll see? Any first had reports?

Anything in particular you want to know? My first day there was Sunday, a lot of runs closed but got some snow and more opened up Monday. What type of runs are you looking for? There are some rocks showing depending on what type of runs you’re wanting to do, but overall I was pleased considering how little snow they had. Nothing heavy, but it snowed all day today and more scheduled for this week. American pushed my flight back from 11:30 to 4:00 tomorrow, so I’m going to get a half day in at bridger bowl before heading back to MS.

I spent the majority of my time off of six shooter. Horseshoe had been closed, but they opened it while I was there and it was great. Double blue and easy blacks are about the extent of my range, but I really enjoyed skiing whiskey, lizette, and pomp as far as tree runs go. I did go to the south side and it was a little Rocky up top, but sunlight was a great run.

Bridger this morning was unbelievable in the trees off of alpine.

It was. I hit those trees 6-7 times before I had to leave at 1 and left so much untracked snow. Great way to end the trip.

Anyone have thoughts on which of the following two options to pick for Mardi Gras 2025 (early March)? I'll be using Hyatt points for lodging and miles for flights - flying into SLC or EGE - so cost of that is not a consideration. We are a family of 3 with one pretty good skier, one intermediate skier, and what will be a 10 year old snowboarder on his 3rd trip (would probably take a couple days of lessons). We may eat out a night or two, but would also go to the grocery and cook some meals at our room.

1. Vail in Lionshead at Montaneros.

2. Park City at the Hyatt Centric in the Canyons.

None of us have skied either location. I'm leaning Vail, but the direct flight to SLC is tempting. We all generally stay on piste, so not looking for a ton of off trail terrain.

I would say Vail if you don’t plan on going out. Will be equal or less crowded than Park City with the same amount of variety when it comes to terrain.

You’ll be about a 10 minute walk from the main Vail village if you’re in Lions Head. LH still offers some options though for food/booze or entertainment.

LH has its own lift so no issues there.

In Vail, you’ll be in the village. You can shoot over to Beaver Creek or Breck if you wanted to change it up for a day. You’ll have a lot more options your way being in the I-70 corridor.

Park City is a sweet town. I’d much prefer PC as a town over Vail. The closer proximity to SLC is much better than Denver though.

You can’t go wrong with either imo. I’d probably pick Vail though. The village is legit.

Plan your travel for both to avoid morning commutes out to your hotels from the airports and evening returns back to the city for your flights. Especially if you’re planning on returning back on a Sunday.

Appreciate the feedback. Out of Vail and Park City, it will be Vail this trip...with one more consideration. I had ruled out Snowmass because of how expensive the lift tickets are, but I'm willing to reconsider. We can do the Ikon base pass plus - which is way more expensive than a 5 day epic pass. But, we are also going to Niseko in 2025, and that is covered by the base pass plus. The base pass plus would still be a couple $100 more per person than buying a 5 day pass to Vail and Niseko separately, but I can eat it if that will be a better option. The Hyatt option there is Top of the Village, which is supposed to be ski-in ski-out. We'd fly into ASE.

There’s a Grand Hyatt in Beaver that’s a great option.

Can you link to what you’re talking about? I have an Ikon Pass and as far as I am aware, passes are no longer on sale other than daily lift tickets. Checking the Ikon site, there is no longer an option to buy a season pass for this season. But you mentioned going to Niseko on 2025. A 23/24 pass will not work in 2025.

I'm looking at the 24/25 season for both trips and assuming the options/pricing will be somewhat similar to 23/24.

We really enjoy Beaver Creek and went there last year and are going later this year. The Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek is super convenient, but we prefer a condo style setup with kitchen if possible when traveling with our son.

I should’ve explained better. We skied off of six shooter and lone tree due to the better snow. Wind was out of the south for all of our trip and a lot of the snow over there was blown off of the ridge up there, constantly refreshing the runs. A lot of the stuff off of ramcharger down to the base was icy and scraped off. Same with steeper sections/head walls off of swift current. A lot of that is likely to have changed/gotten better with the snow they are getting since Tuesday though.

I know you didn’t ask, but blue moon bakery flies under the radar and you won’t have to wait an hour like everywhere else. Very good pizza and sandwiches. Also the taco truck in the ace hardware parking lot (not the one at the gas station) comes highly recommended by locals and the liftys.

I have been out of the loop this year. How is the snow in Park City?

What about Beaver Creek?

I may be able to pull off a late March trip.

No worries, I've been busy working and now traveling to get out there (currently in Denver). Thanks for the six shooter and lone tree suggestions, I'll likely start my day there tomorrow and venture around. The guys I'm with will be hungry so I'll suggest the bakery and taco truck

Also, I met a guy on the lift that just graduated school, was taking a year off, and lives in his mom’s ski-in ski-out. We drank beer on the last lift up of the day and he enthusiastically offered to show me around the mountain “I know every inch of this mountain!” Never could make it work out, but he seemed keen to show folks around. If you want his number feel free to shoot me an email.

Tell me about Breckenridge. I’m a snowboarder. Planning a trip Mardi Gras 2025, with a large group of some non-/skiers and aside from me, mostly beginners. I’ve ridden Breck one day and it soured me because for whatever reason it felt like I was always on cat tracks. I understand it’s a world class mountain so I’ll be happy to give it another chance and better plan my choices. Vail is my favorite mountain, but lodging is just too expensive for a group of 15 (we want to stay together). I was leaning towards PC but me, my son and wife have already been there and they haven’t been to Colorado. I want them to experience that. Is Breck a good town for 4-5 ladies that are not going to be skiing? How good is it for beginners? Any recs on finding a nice big house near the lifts? I’ve checked VRBO and Airbnb and they have some good options but don’t want to leave any stones unturned. The wives also want to do tubing and snowmobiling. I found Frisco Adventure Park for tubing which is right there only 10 minutes away and looks great. Any recs for snowmobiling?
