The issue with today's North Face is that it is certainly not as well made as the ones from a decade ago. The North Face used to be decent gear, but now it's for middle-schoolers... That should tell you all you need to know about the current quality.

I got my step-daughter a Tom Bihn Synik 30. A little pricey, but it will last forever.

i received an l.l. bean backpack in middle school. it lasted me all the way through grad school. i still have it & bring it to the pool/beach/boat etc.

it's got a nice patina.

I keep hearing and reading this and I'm glad it didnt deter me from buying North Face ski gear for my one or two trips a year. I think the negative feedback helped me out and I got a 4 in 1 with a zip in vest and coat for less than $200 and the thing still looks and works fantastic. If I lived in a colder climate were skiing was done more regularly I might feel a bit different but I have had zero issues with any of the North face cold gear I have purchased the last ten years.
