Shotgun for Turkey Hunting

You’re going to get a ton of different opinions. The bottom line is you don’t need a special turkey shotgun. You just need to select an appropriate choke and shell combination and be sure to pattern the gun!

IMO though, the best is something short, reasonably light weight, and doesn’t kick like a mule. The TSS shells have opened up a ton of opportunity’s for smaller gauge guns as well, but as of right now, my Mossberg 940 Pro Turkey with 18.5” barrel is what I would call the best shotgun for turkey hunting. I hope they make one in 20 gauge.

I got a tristar viper in .20 with a pistol style red dot. I shoot an Indian river choke with federal tss. I don’t shoot them across the field so I’m not sure the effectiveness at something ridiculous like 60 yards, but they don’t flop at 40.

Best of all it’s very light, I can carry it all day (and have multiple times) without fatigue. I would absolutely recommend it.

12ga full choke that is reliable.

Don’t overthink it.

I don't turkey hunt, but my parent's (deer hunter's) borrow my 1187 every year for turkey hunting.

They use a patternmaster anaconda LINK and have done well with it.

They are not using a scope or anything like that. It is the plain 1187, nothing special. I think it was 400-500 new.



I am sure you can take any shotgun and put a decent choke on it and hunt turkey.
