We have to replace ours at the end of the year/beginning of next year. I called a local company in North Miss. When I asked about the 0% financing the lady told me they get charged up to 15% by the finance company as a "dealer fee". She then told me they pass that cost to the customer. So an extra $1500 for financing. Not sure if that is true for every company. There are also some YouTube videos out there about the 0% financing.

What’s a new hvac unit costing these days with Biden at the realms? 20k for your basic?

Not sure. We replaced ours about 6-7 years ago and it ran $7-8k

We financed at 0% for a $15k unit. We had it in savings but made absolutely no sense to hit the savings if we didn’t need to.

They would have given it to you cheaper if you offered cash.

Always negotiate the price and don’t act like you want to take the 0% financing. Then, after you agree to a price, bring out the 0% interest offer….even better when it’s a promo

And get multiple quotes. I got 3 quotes, same job. 2 of the quotes were $2000 apart and the 3rd was over $7000 more. I assume the 3rd really didn't want the job. All 3 companies had great reviews, both online and by word of mouth, and were very easy to deal with in the process.

Get yourself a Carrier or Trane system and see how hard that payment is every month.

As I have posted before, I fully expect to get bent hard over for a new unit once my system croaks.

I am going to sweat it out for the rest of the summer with window units and once the cooler weather kicks in, I will start getting quotes when companies start slowing down. But with the way South Louisiana winters go, we will go from Summer to Winter in one cold front. Then we will be hot again.

I paid $4700 + tax for a 4 ton Trane A/C with gas furnace in 2018

I don't have that big of a unit but I'd bet that same job goes for 3-4 times nowadays.

You people are dealing with the wrong HVAC guys.

I have a smaller house and my unit is 2.5 tons with gas furnace, paid 3000 plus in 1996 when I built the house. Now this did include duct work also. April 2022 I replaced everything minus the duct work and it was 4700.

Most people price shop and settle on price before payment is discussed.

My brother owns a very successful hvac company. Nearly 60% of his customers finance.

$4700 is probably about the cost of those materials now. I don't think anyone is doing the job for free. It's an 8 hour job, and usually requires 2 laborers to meet that timeline. I agree, HVAC companies are crushing it on margins. I paid $9000 and felt like I stole something after seeing other quotes, despite my understanding that half of that cost was markup and labor.

Had to years ago when my kids were still at home. I also had a larger house. Kids and a bigger unit made it hard to have a savings.

Now being older in a smaller house, I paid $4,700 in cash in 2017 for a new Rheem unit.

My house on Toledo Bend is larger and was a 100% gut, redone in 2020, so I have a fairly new Rheem 4 ton unit.

I don’t care what brand the hvac system is as that what the guys sold.

Knock on wood that they don’t break.

It's still 4k in parts today if you ordered online and have dropped shipped. Ac companies are gouging imo.

Hugely. I had Bank of America ask me to mix in a bunch of these in a portfolio of other home improvement type assets and when we looked at the value versus the financed amounts I quickly realized it was a terrible idea and we declined. There’s just nothing to really secure these and you can’t repo shite that’s attached to the house and they don’t get fixture filings usually.

HVAC companies can gouge all they want because they're the only ones who can get the refrigerant. It's not really hard to do, but they hold all the manuals and 'freon'.

How the hell are you guys paying 15K plus for new units? Do you not have a lot of HVAC companies in your area? I was quoted $15,000 by a large company and $8500 for the exact same unit by a smaller, but more reputable company. Third quote was around $9500. The two lower quotes did not offer financing options, but I'll be damned if I'm paying almost double for the same unit just to finance it.

A capacitor costs about $40-50 and takes 10 minutes to change. Fricking a/c people are screwing people royally.

Right, but financing is never "free". It's just built into the purchase price. If you agreed to pay $10K at 0% for 5 years, but then asked what they could do for cash, my bet is that they'd lower the price.
