Why do we continuously schedule marquee matchups for our first game of the season? Seems like every other school is smart enough to wait until game 2 to figure out what works and what doesn't against a lesser opponent.

ESPN pays us a shitload to do it that’s why.

If I had to guess, it would be to help with brand exposure.
When you are playing the only big game in week 1, more people are going to pay attention, therefore maximizing exposure.
And this.

Champions don't make excuses. Win the damn game. Don't give me this week 2 BS for marquee matchups. Thats a loser mentality.

Not saying that I disagree with you. Just giving potential reasons.

Unfortunately, money is worth everything in college sports now.
I think most ADs and boards would rather be top ten in producing money for 20 years than having a national championship...

We had a week 1 warm up in 2019. STFU.

The point is you don't make excuses for losing games. We schedule legit opponents week 1 and if we lose then we lose but avoiding the matchups week 1 to schedule a warm up is a loser mentality.
