Closed Airspace Around NYC??

Family is flying from BOS to MCO this afternoon - plane had to return to gate at BOS for more fuel due to closed airspace around NYC causing extensive detour - any ideas why NYC airspace is closed? TIA

Looks to be weather-related ground stops at many airports up there. LGA is one of them.

I’m sitting on a grounded SW flight from LGA to ATL. They aren’t blaming closed air traffic, but saying LGA is a mess, ATL is a mess, and there are 2 weather patterns we can’t go through.

I'm the OP - I appreciate ALL of the responses - after all, this is the OT and I expect at least half of the responses to all threads will be some smartass semi-humorous reply - that's what makes this site so entertaining - I can sift thru the noise to find the serious info - and maybe laugh a little during the search.

There have been airspace restrictions around LaGuardia in particular off and on the past couple of months that have essentially limited landing strips.
I imagine its something to do with that kind of thing.
