I own that book.
Clyde’s other book, Just Takin’ Orders, came with it.

Other good reads are:
The Last Hayride
Cross to Bear, by John Maginnis, about the race between EWE and David Duke

Exactly .. the poster above who claimed EWE was drunk when he chased his mom was most likely mistaken .

In that regard, EWE was exactly like Joe Biden and Donald Trump, both of whom claim to have never let a drop of alcohol ever cross their lips in their entire lives .

Meh, Wallace somehow managed to rehabilitate himself pretty well.

He did enough to get the black vote the last time he ran for governor, but I was talking about the state's reputation throughout the nation as a whole.

Huey P. was a national phenomenon, but Edwards was mainly a state-wide p-hound and crook.

I think I am correct in saying that EWE did not legalize any gambling in this state outside the land casino in NOLA.

Roemer, the "reform" governor did. Lottery, offshore casinos, all were Buddy's.

Y'all can say what you want about EWE, and you might be right on some, but I know of many instances he helped poor, medically challenged people, for absolutely nothing in return. He had an affection for those in need.

I'm sure there are those on here, either posting or lurking, that might have been closer to EWE than me, but not many. He and I were good friends. He never asked me to do anything illegally. He helped me numerous times, not for me, but for others.

I know of people needing a certain type of medical care, EWE helped them get it.

Liberal? He voted for Nixon, Ford, for sure. He made a statement to me not long before he died: "If JFK were alive today, he'd be a moderate Republican."

Totally a fan of the US military. Believed, if possible, should we get in a war, win it; stop pussyfooting around. Remember he was in the service at the end of WWII.

That's a nice story.

EWE was still a crook and stole from the people of this state. Because he opened a few sick beds doesn't mean he wasn't holding the State out for the highest bidder.

In 1974 he was the new governor and he went into Galatoire's in a leisure suit with spread collar. The m'aitre D told him he would have to put on a proper coat and tie to dine there, which he did, no questions asked.

My dad was on a jury in Lake Charles in the 50’s and he told my mom that the attorney for the defense was amazing. He told her this guy could be governor if he wanted to. It was EWE.

Whatever he was, EWE was no pie in the sky, clown car dummy.

Not surprised he voted for Nixon when the alternative was George McGovern.

People who act as though they have a guttural reaction to Edwards probably were never on the same room with him. He could charm anybody.

Back in his fourth term a buddy of mine who had been real active in College Republicans at LSU went to a party when Edwards dropped in for a while. Edwards recognized him and struck up a conversation.....asked my friend to give him a call on the morning.

So he calls Edwards not knowing what was up. Edwards personally answered the phone. He asked my friend if he wanted to work in DC. He gave my friend the phone # and it was Richard Baker's office and his Chief of Staff. After talking for a while he was offered a job. ..... Baker was a Republican.

EWE did not need to do it, he got nothing out of it of any intrinsic value. My friend is grateful to him to this day. Edwards never asked for anything in return.

Yeah he was corrupt, yep he made a buck on the influence peddling. But he was a complicated man. Because he was not all about the money. He would help out those he did not agree with. Even those who criticized him vociferously

I really think the criminal charges I'm the 80's was to keep EWE out of the national scene. He was a state senator before governor and got a deal passed to sell Louisiana rice to Korea. He was only in DC a short time before governor. My opinion is there wasn't enough room in the DNC for 2 Bill Clinton's.

When I was in BR during the late 80’s doing some training, EWE and I were in the same coffee shop. We made eye contact as he was leaving and he stopped and came over to say hello. As much as I disliked him as a politician, he was very disarming and very smooth. Similar to what I am told about Clinton. When you meet them, it’s hard not to like them.

Something that has always been an interesting conversation with a newcomer or long-time resident of the state, is how we should hold the gas companies accountable somehow. No one ever considers that when the deals made to build refineries took folks out of the sugar cane fields and got most folks and their descendants here a chance at more than a high school education for generations to come.

EWE selling the State out to the highest bidder is what every Governor does or should do. EWE just had his deal table out in the sun for all to see. There's always a deal table with either side of politics, I've noticed that depending on personality is whether that deal table is open or highly confidential.

EWE is gone, his decisions made, and we live with the outcomes. We can't get new jobs here (South LA)now because of shitty schools and bad neighborhoods. That's what the development teams who I served drinks to who stayed in those hotels off Corporate Blvd told me when Dave and Buster's tried to build here and other various above mid-tier franchises to a franchise-loving city. Let that sink in.

I'm not writing this poking at who is wrong, and I never really cared for EWE. Ate some of his son's waygu once, and considered it getting some of my family's tax money back.
But I don't think any company that would generate any significant jobs is coming to south LA anytime soon, all the folks I grew up with want to move elsewhere and I definitely don't blame them. Just seems there is nothing worth its current value here and no younger person in the generation really wants to fight or can really do anything to try to make any major south LA city better.

EWE was never going national.

He was regarded as a charming rogue by the Washington establishment, but his fiefdom stopped in Louisiana.
