Chuck Oliver thinks it's gonna be Sonny Gray and Josh Hader.
AA said that they targeted a middle of the order bat at the deadline (it was a righty)and that that particular player wasn't dealt. I'm thinking it was either Machado or Trout.

Zero chance that’s who we were going at as a deadline deal. Do you realize what kind of package that would take, we don’t have those type of bullets on our farm.
It was more than likely a Duvall or Soler type deal.

Yeah, pretty aggressive on my part. I'm sick w/Strep , so my brain isn't working like it should.
But you're right. We don't have that type of ammo.

This wouldn't surprise me and I think it would be a good move.

This one would shock me. I think his contract might end up being close to what Edwin Diaz got and I don't think AA is going to commit that much money to the bullpen with Iglesias already on a huge contract.

I just have no reason to believe we will ever be in the market for a major free agent piece.
We kinda have to start thinking that way though. In the past, it wasn’t necessary because we were an up-and-coming franchise with a stacked farm. Now, we’re right smack dab in the middle of our window and don’t have much on the farm that can help this team take a big step. Gotta improve this team through other avenues now.

Agreed, especially for a FA pitcher. Was trying to think of who is out there that would be comparable to Morton and would consider a 1-3 year deal for 20-25mil a year. Most of the high end guys are gonna want more years than that I would assume and I doubt AA budges much (though I agree he is gonna have to get more aggressive)
Wonder what numbers they have offered Max, if any.

You could make the argument that, if there was ever a time to sell out for a win-now year, 2024 would be the year to do it... assuming we don't re-sign Fried.
Our rotation will take a gigantic step back if he walks.

You don't have to flame me, man . "Flash in the pan" is unfair to Fried, though. I get it.
Fried has been a great regular season pitcher for the Braves since becoming a fulltime starter, but if folks looked at his postseason numbers and game logs objectively they’d see that he hasn’t been the reliable ace that the team needs. It’s basically been 50/50 on whether he’s been good/great or a complete shite show. You can point to health, but that’s a part of the reliability equation as well, fair or not.
And this is coming from someone who’s had Fried as his favorite of all the pitching prospects that were accumulated during the rebuild via trade or draft.

That's why I keep coming back to Sonny Gray.

He’s going to sign a longer term deal than the 1+1 deal we kept giving Morton the last few years.

I think Gray will get a 3-4 year deal at somewhere like $20M AAV. I don't think that's the kind of number that will scare AA off.
I also think the recurring blister problems will be a big sticking point in Fried contract negotiations. That isn't something that'll just go away and he has said that the humidity exacerbates the problem.

Riley, Harris, and Rosario (yes, Rosario) are GG finalists.
Posted on 10/18/23 at 10:17 pm to VADawg
I would have had Jordan Montgomery in the Sonny Gray category but his recent success is going to drive up the price.
Riley is not terrible at 3rd but no where GG level. Rosario as a finalist is laughable.

I mean, I've been pretty critical of him being average defensively in the past, but this year he was very good defensively. He doesn't deserve the GG simply because Hayes was way better, but he had the third best DRS of any 3B in the NL this season (and 4th in baseball).

Seems like a very Dodgers or Giants type signing. Feel like a team might be willing to go for more years and/or dollars than the Braves will be.

Josh Hader
In the playoffs his ability to go multiple innings could bandaid over what otherwise could be a meh or bad bullpen again. I'll believe it when I see it though.
I think from a PR standpoint I don't think the Braves want any more attention than they already get yearly from the chop and the Ozuna stuff popping back up, but Bauer for a decent chunk of change for a year makes a lot of sense here.

The years might. AA loves team options, other teams may be willing to go an extra year guaranteed or at least have a mutual or player option on the back end.

Hopefully this wouldn't be the only move, but a Jack Flaherty one year prove it deal seems very AA.
