We will be flying into Atlanta(family of 6) Tuesday - Saturday and renting a car to head up to a cabin with family.

We have never been to this area and not sure how cold it can get. We are more beach travelers so a cold thanks giving will be a new experience...Kids don't even have coats!

Does it snow during this time there?

Looking at a trip to Helen to see the little town as well as a trip to Amicalola Falls.

Any other suggestions while there?

typically not THAT cold, but we went last thanksgiving and a cold front came through and the low was in the 20s. I'd expect milder temps and there's not a ton of elevation. Great little area, lots of easy family friendly hikes in that tri-state area.

Snow that time of year is pretty unlikely, but it's possible. You'll likely see highs in the low 50s to mid 60s.

Toccoa River Swinging Bridge. Real pretty and super easy hike (walk) to the bridge.

If you have any time without the kids in tow, Wolf Mountain Vineyard is great.

Amicalola Falls will be great with family. I'm not a huge fan of Helen. It can be fun but is past its prime in my opinion. I generally recommend people go to Dahlonega instead. The downtown is better than Helen and there are 2 gold panning places (Crisson Mines and Consolidated Mines) that the kids will go nuts over. Blairsville is also a really nice small town. Brasstown Bald and Vogel State Park are also good stops if you are looking for scenery and hikes. Merciers Orchards near Blue Ridge is worth a look. Also check out Atlanta Motorsports Park for high speed go carts near Dawsonville.

I’d pass on Helen

Dahlonega is worth the trip

Several nice wineries around.

We’ll be in BR that week

The Consolidated Mines looks like a fun time!

Would we have enough time to do the mine and Amicalola in the same day trip?

Yeah. You probably won't spend more than 2-3 hours max at Amicalola Falls.

Helen is interesting, but def don't feel like you have to go out your way for it. I'd dive into the wineries as well more. We did 2 with our kids when we were up that way and it is quite enjoyable with them.

Weather Wise - Unless some sort of Freak event, you wont see any snow or anything. Thanksgiving week is def still way early for any of that being a possibility.

Fun times. Enjoy that area.

We’ve done the consolidated mine tour and I recommend it. It actually ends up under the nearby Walmart if I remember correctly. You can pan for gold after the tour. I still have a little nugget from that day. Christmas is a big deal in Dahlonega on the square. There’s a small play theater called the Holly where we watched the performance of The Christmas Story—was one of the best live performances I’ve see .
