I have travelled with guns many times and this past September coming out of Canada I made a mistake unknown to me and I had all paperwork and rules on me as I always do when traveling out of the country.
DO NOT and I mean DO NOT have any part of a gun in your carry on when leaving the country. I had my choke tubes in my carry on coming back (they were in the gun case going) and got detained in customs, got to meet the Canadian mounties, had my record run it was a real cluster. While most of us don't consider choke tubes a fire arm some customs agents do....

Friend of mine got his choke tunes taken this year. Meanwhile, I unknowingly had large primers and live rounds in my carry on and didn't get stopped.

I flew in September with non-tsa locks. You are supposed to hang around for like 15 minutes after you check it in case they need to open your case. Also, someone recommended to me to put a different set of locks inside the case with a note in case they need to cut your locks. Based on the comment earlier I think I’ll make my backup set in the case a TSA lock set for next time, I’d still start with a normal lock though.
I also put as much as I can in with the gun. When I flew with my bow, I had my pistol in bow case, clothes, optics, etc. just because I don’t think airline employees will jack with a locked firearm case.

In Utah now. Flew up here on delta out of Nola. Didn’t hang around. Checking rifles is a nonissue. Have done it a few times. Ammo in my check bag. Super easy.

What is the down side of using TSA locks?

I don't use a TSA lock anyway, but I wasn't aware that anyone w/ a 3D printer can now have a master key for the TSA lock.

What is the down side of using TSA locks? I just flew United and had tsa approved locks on my pelican case, I had zero issue.
The guns are supposed to be under your control.
Hang around at the check in until they clear the case.
I've always insisted on being present when they open my case with my key if they needed to. It's your property and your right to be there if they need to get inside.
I had some aerosol Rem oil confiscated once as it is a "flammable solvent" but other than that always got through fine.
They used to make you present the firearm at the ticket counter but I don't believe they do any longer.
