He has mentioned getting his license and then trying to go to Southwest to get training and commercial license?
No plans to go to college, just wants to get out and start flying.
We have not explored to guard route.

not the way this works

demand is high right now but historically a four year degree has been a requirement for the big leagues and when hiring slows down it will definitely be a requirement

need a four year degree there too unless you go Army warrant officer route

It typically takes 1000-2000 hours after a full four years of College in aviation (that might be for left seat time/Captain). I'm not a pilot but know several from GA to Commercial. Just getting a private I doubt SW nor any one else will look to train him. In LA, I think Tech and ULM offer Aviation degrees. In MS, Delta State offers 4-year and Hinds Community offers 2-year that I think transfers to 4-year but first two years are a bit cheaper as its a Community College. If he doesn't what College maybe look at Crop Dusting. It's dangerous but pays well. Not sure time required for that certification.
777 and couple others could actually give you some very factual information.

He needs a four year degree! Or military experience. Airlines aren’t looking for 20 yr old kids. He needs to slow down,23 is minimum age ATP. 25 is about when he’s gonna be ready for a big time flying job. I’d do college and air guard maybe. Get a private license for now but there’s no rush at 17.

seeing as every decent airline job is seniority driven the kid should grab it by the arse and get it done, no stops along the way, there is a huge rush

I think these aviation curriculums slow down your progression and drive up your costs, there's not enough scholastics to stretch out a commercial/instrument/multi over four years
There's a flight school in my area with a "professional pilot" program that costs $103k. No degree. Just 275 hours and PPL to CFII. Wild.
I just wanna find a flight club and build time in a clapped out 150 or cherokee.

Everyone’s different I guess. At 17, I did 4 hrs Air Force. Flight school at 21. At 23 took my first real flying job. 22 years later I regret not waiting and doing a couple years of college first just to mature a bit. And still have 40+ yrs after to fly.

I know a retired military pilot who's local. He does all kinds of youth pilot training.
Email me at my burner email and can get you info etc

That seems like a lot of money for not much in return. 275 hours? With 4-year degree you still need 1,000 hours for Airline. "Professional Pilot" might mean you can fly someone's King Air but it's not Airline.

Auburn has a great flight program well connected to Delta. My nephew will probably go there next year. The retired CEO of Delta built the current facilities.

Awesome…and pretty cool that he knows what he wants to do at such a young age.
But this is complicated. Theres so many routes he can go, because of his age.
Where does he want to end up? What does he want to fly? Is he interested in serving in the military? Is money an issue? See what I mean?
There’s been a lot of good info put out by other posters, namely 777Tiger and Tuscaloosa. I’d love to help too, but give us a little more info on the above questions and then we can probably be of better help.

Um, yeah, there’s a bit more to it than “applying.” And the same can be said for any Service Academy. I know this first hand. Great way to go though, if you’re qualified.

If he wants to fly for an airline, he needs to find a way to earn a 4 year degree. Any degree. While no longer technically required by any airline, it used to be, and likely will be again one day. An online degree from an accredited University would be fine and can be done on his own time, and again - does not need to be aviation related.
You may have him look into programs like ATP, which is a fast track program and would allow him to get all of his ratings in a very short period of time. Once he gets his through his CFI ratings, it will likely take 18-24 months to build the time required to earn his Airline Transportation Pilot certificate.
My recommendation, based on the info you’ve provided, would be to knock out his private pilot’s license at a school like the one he’s currently at, and then find a fast track program like ATP to finish the rest. Previously, ATP required 2 years of work history or 2 years of college, but I’m not sure if that’s still the case.
This is all assuming that he has no interest in going the Guard route.
One thing is certain: this industry changes quickly. If he can find a pilot mentor locally who flies for an airline, that would be worth its weight in gold.

The guard/service is not currently something he wants to do.

Flight instructor here. It is a pretty lousy job full time from what I understand.
The days of “muhh uncle is a fedex pilot who flies one flight a month for uhhhh bazilllion dollars” is over.
He will never be criticized for being a professional pilot. But he ain’t gonna be rewarded either.
