If they lose a game, they are out. I think that's pretty fair for the level of competition that most of them play against.
What if they run the table in conference and their only loss is a close game against a top 10-15 P5 school on the road? You’d be penalizing a G5 school for trying to schedule quality OoC opponents when its one-sided on what school gets to host. Very few P5’s (outside of the conference bottom feeders) are going to agree to home-and-home series vs a G5 team.

With a 12 team field, there needs to be at least 6 spots guaranteed for conference champs. Its dumb to have so many at-large spots that the 3rd and 4th best teams from thr B1G and SEC get in almost every year. Cheapens the regular season if you can lose 3 games and still be practically guaranteed a playoff spot.

What does it prove if you lose to the only good team on your schedule?

The 3rd best team in the SEC or B1G is very likely going to be better than the best team in the 5th or 6th best conference in the coming years.

but those tougher opponents rarely would agree to a home-and-home with a G5 school

I’m fine with the highest ranked G5 being in the playoff but that’s about it… everyone who begins to earn it in a G5 conference wants out.

I'm thinking PAC-12 should go super regional. Within driving distance.

Washington St.
Oregon St.
Boise St.
Idaho
Utah
Utah St.

a few California schools. nothing serious.
