How is the way your employer decides to pay you my problem. There is little doubt the guy loading lumber in your truck deserves a better tip.

For the record...I've always said that restaurants should have to pay their servers 15/hr and adjust the food prices rather than customers having to figure out how much to pay the server. In that system merit would truly be rewarded because I suspect people would only feel obliged to tip good service.

I'm not complaining, but if you can't be attentive to my table don't expect to get 20 bucks on a 50 dollar bill...period!

Again...feeding the monster. It's literally been since COVID started that 15-20% tips were considered inadequate.

Look, you tip whatever you want to tip. However, tipping 14-15% is not considered tipping well.

Well 8 bucks on a 50 total bill of which 5 bucks is tax around here (10% with state and local). So 8 bucks is over 17% on that and 7 is 16%.

But that's the point....what is the line for good...it fluctuates in my mind and directly correlates with the level of service which again has gone to shite for the most part recently.

A few months ago I walked in and gave the hostess a 20 dollar bill for a 12 dollar to-go order. She said "do you need change." It's like some of these hoes really do think that they're Jedis. It's just bizarre.

I noticed when I was waiting tables ages ago that it was the younger employees who asked this, and they usually asked it without opening the book/knowing what the customer left.

I think what they were trying to do was determine whether they need to pick up the book and take it to the back, or if they could just leave it on the table and say thanks/move on to other tasks.

I never asked because it felt rude. But I do think those that asked weren’t doing it a malicious way. They were just kinda young/dumb and didn’t realize it was rude to assume.

had a quick lunch by myself at a mexican place recently... bill came to like $14 and change.. I paid with a $20 and got back a $5 and the change...should have seen the face I got when I asked the $5 to be broken into smaller bills.

Guess she expected about a 40% tip for brining me a taco salad and coke

Went to dinner tonight. The bill was $58. Put $100 bill in folder. Waitress never came back. I sought her out and asked about my change. She said she assumed it was a tip because I didn’t pay with smaller bills. WTF

As a good tipping person, what she did is insanity.

How old was she? I had a young waiter once ask if I wanted change, about the same amount here, he returned with $100 in various bills. (I truly think he didn't know how to do the math)

You don't ask if they need change. You see there is cash and say "I'll be right back with your change!" which allows the customer to say "Keep the change." or agree with the server bringing change back. I was always floored when servers asked if someone needed change.

I go to an excellent Mom & Pop restaurant. Waiter brings menu and takes our drink order. Brings drinks and takes our food order. Brings food. Stops by and ask if everything is OK. Brings check. Averages 25-30 bucks. I almost always tip 25%. In this case probably 7 dollars. 7 dollars for 6 or 7 minutes work. Pretty good. Next day I go to a nicer place. Waiter does exactly the same job as the first Waiter. Bill is 50-60 dollars. 25% is roughly 12 bucks. Why should this Waiter get 5 dollars more for the same few minutes of work?

People like you would have a bitch fit and a half if they addressed the short staffing problem by closing sections and telling you they’re on a wait due to lack of staff to fill all sections.

It’s lose-lose with folks like you.

As Yellowfin said, I dine out regularly and couldn’t tell you the last time I had a truly awful experience. Maybe consider channeling your energy into the company you’re with and just relax.

Who walks into a restaurant and notices which other patrons have drinks? That’s bizarre.

So why not make both persons pay not tip dependent? Other countries have manage to do it, why can’t the US? When I go to but food or whatever, it’s not my job to determine the employee’s pay. That ‘s between the employer and the employee. That burden should not be in the customers.

So I'm supposed to tip them for the fricking tax???? You people are insane.

Also my tip is 15-20% is that not good....again feed the damn monster.

Like I said pay the SOBs $15/hr and have it done with...if you want to increase your food prices as the owner I'm all for it.

To avoid any confusion I always let the server know if I'm expecting change back or not whenever they pick up my cash at the table. I've never had a problem.

I mean, most people opting to dine at a table and be waited on aren't fretting over a few dollars and just throw 20% down on the total and call it a day.

I say most because I do have one friend that pulls out a whole arse calculator. Although.. I think it's because she doesn't know how to do 20% in her head. LOL.
