I think Johnson was bothered by the mound condition as he came into the game after the weather delay. He slipped down pitching to the first batter he faced.

I wouldn't get too caught up with Cam's performance today. I don't recall many control issues in the fall when weather conditions were better.

He was the first pitcher out after the weather delay and the decision to cover the mound and infield was delayed and took a few minutes before the grounds crew pulled the tarp which soaked the entire infield. Then before play resumed they spent most of their time working and trying to dry the infield dirt between 2nd and first base and almost no effort on the mound until it was pointed out by Johnson after he had walked the first batter on 4 pitches.

He looked uncomfortable with his footing and mud gumming up his cleats and not as focused as usual. I suspect that this was an outlier from his usually crisp pitching execution.

Correct, the first January appearance, particularly for a freshman, tells it all.

This is the rant. One inning in Jan, or 3 at bats is all it takes to shape these people's opinions for the entire season.

Also Tommy White's rough day at the plate was not as reflective of his at bats as it would appear on paper. He had some long drawn out at bats where he fouled several pitches off before he struck out and a couple hit deep into foul territory just outside the line.
