I’ve never had one, but I hunt with an older gentleman that did. He said the dread is the worst part. Go get it fixed before it turns into a bigger problem.

I’m no general surgeon, but I’m fairly certain the indications for surgical repair are based on symptomatology, not to prevent strangulation. Also, larger hernias are less likely to strangulate than smaller ones.
Furthermore, repair of a hernia will likely involve mesh, which increases the risk for small bowel obstruction, which can be just as bad as an incarcerated hernia.
You can go see a doctor if you want, but they will probably tell you don’t bother it if it’s not bothering you.

if its bigger you dont have to worry about strangulation as much. the ones that are 2-4 cm are the size that would increase your risk of what all the other posters are talking about.

Why in the world would he need to see an IM doc just to get a referral to general surgery? What's IM gonna do that a GP won't?
