Agree with you on almost your entire post, but the part about Danny McCray. My brother and I discussed McCray in depth that season which was the Pelini one I think. What really happened in our opinion was that McCray was the closest defender in busted coverages. We believe he was actually doing his job but the guys whose responsibility it was to cover these guys were out of the play due to their busts. In other words, "wrong place at the wrong time". As George C. Scott said in the Patton movie, "that's OK, son...you are only damn person in this place who knows what he is doing."

Yeah, if Speights had just "bear hugged" the TE, Speights' momentum would've taken the TE out of bounds, well short of the first down. Even though defense was optional in the Pac 12, it's still hard to envision him as a 1st team all-conference pick.

That's pretty much exactly what happened. Harry Coleman and Curt Taylor in particular used to bite on pump fakes and QB look-offs in 08. Go check that long TD Tebow threw to Harvin when UF killed us.
Also, the bigger issue may have been Pelini/ Malveto used McCray mostly as a nickel/ dime covering slot guys in 07 and 08 and he's more of a pure safety.

Yeah, going from A&M to LSU likely just made him think he was untouchable. Having to play at UTSA should be a much colder splash of reality. Although... he's still at an FBS school that looks as if it has a decent shot at being in the playoff convo for as long as G5s are allowed a slot so he may still not realize he's wasting his gifts.

That was Zy Alexander in the Army game right before halftime. What a damn shame because IMO he was really starting to come on as a CB. Kelly had said he had talent but just needed to find the ball. ZA did always seem to be right on his guy but you still have to locate the football....in the last few games before the Army game, he was doing that.

I really hope the lightbulb comes on for this young man. So much talent to continue and play in the NFL. Him not being able to be a starter for us really hurt.

I hope he does too, no one wants to see the kid fail. I just don’t think he’s capable of doing it. We’ve seen enough of Major Burns to know what he is as a player at this point
