They did. They did some tests and observations and determined that I suffered from being a perfectly normal 12 year old boy in 1977. We got in fights all the time. We also had bb wars, had horrendous bicycle crashes, hunted shite out of season with .22 rifles and airguns...all manner of shite that seems strange today. We would play king of the mountain and tackle the man with the ball and someone would be fighting every 15 minutes or so...and we would do it hours everyday.

To quote the great Judge Judy, "Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining."

We were still doing all that shite in the 80's, and like most boys, I got into my fair share of fist fights. A handful a year was normal for most boys. If you were getting into one or two fistfights multiple days a week for years, you were an outlier and had a serious psychological problem.

I mean, let's do the math here and I'll be charitable and go with the lowest possible numbers.

quote:

I was taking taekwondo and boxing golden gloves at the same time between 10 and 14 and also getting in a fight or two most days of the week

So at a minimum you fought 4 days a week, and fought twice a day on at least one of those: 5x52=260 fights a year over 5 years=1300.

You got into [bottom estimate] 1300 fistfights in a 5 year period and you're going with "1977 was a different time"? lol

But if there's one thing I've learned from your OWEO on adderall posting, it's that you're usually full of shite so I'll chock this up to being another instance of that.

Boxed Golden Gloves as a youth into college but after my last broken nose and knowing I wasn't going pro and I was going in the Marines, I stopped boxing. BJJ for 17 years. About to get my black belt. My first BJJ school was owned by a MT guy that let our BJJ instructor rent out mat space. The owner gave gave all the jits guys a free month and I got hooked on doing MT. Actually loved incorporating that with my boxing and what was cool, the owner of this place was one of the Power Rangers and he would bring in a bunch of UFC guys to do seminars and such. It was a blast getting to train with that level of talent but like most BJJ schools, drama happened and all the jits guys left for a new school. It's been a fun ride. Still rolling at 52. Lots of injuries, lots of friends, lots of fun.

Hell yes. About the best base you can have for a fighter.

it's stupid to just say across the board that taking martial arts is useless in actual fighting. do you think that UFC fighters are equal in "actual" fighting ability to some jerkoff on the street with no training?

The key is do you spar regularly and spar with someone at higher belt who is better. If you spar regularly, then that actually translates to a fight. If you just do kata and never spar you’re fricked.

oh yeah for sure sparring is essential. i would say regular sparring with higher AND lower belts. for jiu jitsu at least, rolling with lower belts is key to fine tuning alot of your technique because you arent ever goign to get that shite to work on a higher belt. or at least not often.

but yeah, live training is a must if you want to be able to actual apply your skills to a fight.

Dude Royce Gracie won UFC 1 and 2.

And he didn’t destroy anyone. He suffocated them to death with his gi. Without the gi he was worthless.

ok dude, whatever you say. the original UFC champs were all a bunch of untrained dudes that just had some sort of inherent knowledge of fighting, just like you. i'm sure you'd take Royce Gracie in his prime as well, if he didnt have a gi on.

I have a 9 year old who does BJJ. I decided to join as well in October.

I'm still at the stage where I'm not feeling more confident in a self defense situation I'm now realizing how many average looking accountant type people can easily choke out most others.

I think most guys getting into BJJ from the late 90's into the early 2000's were cult followers of Royce. However, it's funny that he wasn't even the best brother. They picked him because he was the less skilled of them all. I am under Royler and spent a year at a Kron Gracie academy and although Royce is very good, Rickson was the beast of the family and Royler was more skilled.

UFC has obviously come light years from those days. I rolled with Kron and he might be hands down the best jits guy I have been on the mat with and even though he is world class, that level of skill just doesn't cut it in the cage exclusively anymore.

I actually did know this, but it's not a well known fact. Are you a black belt?

Jiu Jitsu off and on since 2000, mostly off. Got a blue belt in 2005. Stopped training shortly after that. Got back into it for about a year in 2013. Got back into it in 2018, and am a brown belt now. I complete pretty regularly. I do better against guys in my age and weight class, but get beat by younger guys just about every time I have a match with one.

Brown. In the que for it but will depend on Royler making another swing through Texas unless I go to the mothership. I would really prefer him to tie it on me since he promoted me to Purple.

Boxing for 3 years, Muah Thai a little for the last 1.5 years of that. 20 years ago.

Twice a week. I was in great shape. If I tried jumping rope now for 30 seconds, I'd puke. After the first 20 seconds.

That gym was hot AF in the summer.

A lifetime ago, started Shotokan Karate. Have continued on and off for almost 70 years. Former neighbor was world champ in the late 70’s and today is the highest ranked sensi in the US; 8th degree black. Studied in Japan many years to get there.

All of the kids have at least been exposed to some degree. The grandkids are next.
