Isn't this basically what Coventry & United Health were having problems with several years ago and why so many of the larger networks were not accepting them, or at least not accepting them across the board like they do with BCBS?
I think this is exactly what Elevance is doing in other states where they are buying BCBS.
Maybe I'm just blind to it...but I'm not seeing the upside here except to Pennington/research Academia.
Bad for policyholders after renewal, which will happen eventually
Bad for the Baton Rouge job market, which will lose a large corporate HQ worth of jobs
Good for Pennington/LSU's research community and the politicians that can set up the new "organization"
Nothing done to improve short/medium term healthcare outcomes in the state of Louisiana

Why the hell are they already running ads about their alliance?

So basically BCBS at a national level
BCBS, especially over the last 2-3 years, is difficult to work with from both physician and patient perspective, no doubt. But it's not in the same stratosphere as Anthem/Elevance.

Elevance has the money and willingness to make that “as long as possible “ into forever. They’re flat out soulless. At least Louisiana Blue are your neighbors. Not perfect, but better than a giant corporation with an extensive slimy track record.

He was a vocal opponent until he got to enrich himself and his chief of staff.

The politics behind this could probably write a book with change in governors

Oh happy day. Guess I have a job after all.

he was never vocally against this

... and laying off people in states where their Medicare plans underperformed. Elevance just wants the MA business, they could care two hoots about the members, providers or employees!!

Will they keep the BCBS jobs in Baton Rouge?
According to their press releases, the 3000 jobs will stay in Baton Rouge. Of course, you know how that works, a year later they restructure and, presto, jobs evaporate.

“It is clear that our stakeholders need more time and information to understand the benefits of the changes we have proposed,” reads Wednesday’s statement from Blue Cross.
LOL
It's not a lack of understanding. On the contrary, everyone fully understands what this deal is about.
Every time we hear about a insurance company, or a medical provider merging, it's never to the benefit of the customers. Every time, it results in more costs, worse service, and worse results.
The capitalistic nature of corporations and the need to maximize shareholder value, just does not align with the mission of health.
That's in a general sense.
Specific to this deal, you have the loss of another LA headquarters / employees, as well as this company's reputation as being particularly bad, and finally, the shadiness regarding the foundation that would be funded.
Too many people think LA's health problems can be solved with more money. The only way this is true is to the extent more money is used to bring more providers into practice in certain specialties / general practicioners, as there are certainly some shortages.
However, money going to "research" won't help this, and Elevance is likely to pay providers LESS as opposed to MORE, so this will actually make the provider access situaiton worse, not better.
BCBSLA gets a bad rap, but having had coverage through a number of companies over the years as I've changed jobs / emloyers have changed insurance companies, BCBSLA is probably the least bad option out there.
If BCBSLA feels the need to be bigger, and can justify how that helps, maybe they should merge with another non-profit BCBS entity out there.

Right. No one actually believes that. Many of those jobs will simply be cut, and the rest will be moved out of state in short order.
Except for perhaps a few salesmen, there is no reason to keep those jobs here.

That’s not accurate. Read the language. They said maintain average aggregate employment levels in Louisiana for 2 years. wtf does that mean? Well they already have employees in Louisiana. So they can cut people immediately and still live up to that commitment.

Here is what I was talking about from last year. There may have been a newer one.
https://www.wbrz.com/news/blue-cross-and-blue-shield-of-louisiana-to-be-acquired-by-elevance-health/
quote:
The company says the acquisition is supposed to be complete by the end of 2023. BCBSLA said their headquarters will remain in Baton Rouge and will keep its approximately 3,000 employees.
Later in the same press release
quote:
Like BCBSLA, Elevance Health believes healthcare is best when delivered locally, and following the transaction's close, the Louisiana plan headquarters will remain in Baton Rouge, and will continue to serve its customers locally through its workforce of approximately 3,000 employees.
There isn't a lot of nuance in that statement except for how long they lan to keep the employees

Contrary to what a few butthurt schmucks (like LSUfanHouston) around here say, Landry is not into that kind of crap.

Hi Jeff. As one of your biggest proponents on this site before you actually took office, I can honestly say that you're proving me to be an idiot voting for you. You're not exactly off to a great start in your first 4 weeks in power. What the hell were you thinking making a 26-year old wet-behind-the-ears politically connected girl to be the head of Wildlife & Fisheries? Your optics out of the gate are making JBE look good by comparison. I defended you as a fighter for Louisiana but you look pretty weak sauce so far. I have buyer's remorse, Jeff.

I understand what you’re saying. If you read the actual agreement that was uploaded to the LDI website, and the language from the Better Blue page for Blue Cross, you see the actual language in the agreement. Which reads like bullshite.

How will this benefit people in Louisiana?
Will the larger company squeeze providers more? They are an insurance company. How will they deliver additional value to policy holders?
Hint. They won’t. This is nothing but bad for the policy holders and the state of Louisiana.

This is the answer to everything in this state. When will they fix this part of the interstate, when will they fix tha highway, when will they do anything worth a frick... As soon as elected officials figure out away to get money put in their pockets. I don't give a damn what party they belong to, that's just how its always been and I don't see it changing anytime soon,

It was a bad deal for Louisiana with a bunch of holes in it. Elevance is a shitty national company who constantly makes news for not paying claims, laying off employees, shady practices and cooking the books.
Yep. That's why they keep changing names. Wellpoint, Anthem, Elevance. Keep that shite as far away from here as possible.
