This I carry a back pack bag that is a like little larger than they allow for free but they have never given me an issue with it.

The only negative I've had was I had a connection in Fort Lauderdale one time. For some reason the flight was canceled. When they refunded they only refunded the base fare but not the fees and add ons. So I got a refund of $37 towards a $120 ticket.
I then had to book a $250 flight the next morning with Southwest.

Thanks all for the info. One more: I’m flying with the wife and kid. Should I pay for seat selection to keep us together? Really would prefer we don’t get split up. Or do they make a reasonable effort to keep families together.

How strict are they on the backpack size? I usually travel with a 30L Deuter pack that fits fine under the seat in every plane I’ve flown in. I’ve got an opportunity to take a quick Vegas trip the end of the month and I can definitely pack myself in that bag. Am I going to get a bunch of shite for it?
