If you have woods nearby, this is a battle you can not win. the best you can hope for is to minimize snakes by controlling what attracts them, mainly rodents which can be controlled with poisons and traps.
They are also controlled with Kingsnecks and rat snakes, both of which you should educate yourself and your children to identify. Fortunately, King snakes and Garter/ribbon snakes are absolutely unique. Rat snakes can be a little tougher.
