My friend did within the last two years. They assigned him a place in a small city that’s nice but not desirable as a tourist. He had someone check in on him frequently to make sure he was still there (requirement for the program). He was told by his neighbor that once they stop checking, they’ll never check again which was his case after only two weeks. He spent the rest of him time exploring Italy. He got the passport sent to his house in the US shortly after getting back.

Doing the research can take a lot of work and is the most difficult part.

That's badass. There's three ways to do it: move there and apply, hire an attorney and they file it in the courts, or go through the consulate here
