My guess (and it IS just a guess) is that the judge asked that the headcount not be reported, in order to avoid tainting the jury pool for any possible re-trial. Of course, if that were the case, one would expect that fact to be reported, at a minimum.
The other possibility is that the reporters are just too incompetent to have understood the importance of polling the jury. I do not discount that possibility, either.
