Why even bother playing the season if you'd automatically qualify?

Some people like baseball. The players like to play and compete. Most rational people know you don’t win win every year, no matter how much you want it. Those people avoid the assholes on this site.

This might be the worst take in the history of takes.

It wasn't a serious response. I figured everyone would catch that, but I guess there's always one...

That's the kind of bullshite thinking that stole the All-Valley from Mike Barnes in '89.

I promise you this LSU team would have a better chance of winning a regional than any team from the SWAC, Miz Valley etc.

I thought of that issue, but then, if a Defending Champ is put in, regardless of record, then that means a team that is more deserving to get in stays home...is that fair? No!

Well thats stupid. Last years team was champions. This team hasn't won shite. Why do they deserve a spot based on what last year's team did?

As others have said this isn’t an unheard of practice. It’s a hallmark of the Masters and has been the case for most World Cups.

I think this only works in sports like college baseball and basketball, with wildly disparate strengths of schedule and huge tournament fields.

Giving the SWAC an auto-bid is much more absurd. Eliminating non-P5 auto bids would be a great place to start.

That is a much better argument to have than just allowing the defending champs in. If the smaller conferences want to dance, then make sure they have quality competition on the schedule, have a resume worthy of being in the dance, and let the selection committee do its job. But allowing LSU automatically in even if they went 0-54 this year, would be a crime. You have to not only show that you deserve it but that you actually have a chance once the tournament starts.

Well, so far this LSU team has won 62% of its games.
It still has a few elite players like Holman, Jump, and White. Some really talented but inconsistent pitchers in Ack, Herring, Hurd etc. Underclassmen like Jones, Milam, Larson really coming on strong. A maniacally-obsessive head coach.

There’s no universe in which 2024 LSU wouldn’t be one of the 64 most likely teams to win a regional.

I agree with you bud...the only thing we dont agree on is the national champ getting an automatic bid part and i explained why.

The purpose of the post season is to determine the best team in the country for that season. It’s not a reward in itself. It’s the chance to put all claims to rest and prove it on the field.

Some schools will not ever have a chance to test themselves against the blue bloods until the post season. If they’ve beaten all the teams they’ve faced during the year, they need to be included to separate the fact from the fiction.

LSU is not in that situation. We’ve played the best teams and we already know we’re not good enough. Sending us to the regionals won’t teach anyone anything about us that they don’t already know.

Don’t like it? Well then you’re not up to big time SEC athletics. It’s why we get the big bucks.
