The NFL commissioner joined "The Pat McAfee Show" on Friday and shared his ideal league calendar, which would include a 18 regular-season games, two preseason games and the Super Bowl on Presidents Day weekend.
The league last modified its schedule in 2021, moving from 16 regular season and four preseason games to 17 regular season games and three preseason games. As part of the change, the Super Bowl was pushed back from the first weekend of February to the second.
"I think we're good at 17 now," Goodell said. "But, listen, we're looking at how we continue. I'm not a fan of the preseason ...
"The reality is, I'd rather replace a preseason game with a regular-season game any day. That's just picking quality. If we get to 18 and two, that's not an unreasonable thing."

The league would have to collectively bargain such a change with the NFL Players Association and many players voiced their displeasure with the addition of the 17th regular season game after it passed in the last CBA four years ago.
In addition to schedule expansion, Goodell also floated the idea of expanding the NFL's international presence. He said the league could have as many as 16 games played annually overseas within the next 10 years, up from five scheduled for the 2024 season.

everyone knows 18 games are inevitable....there's too much money involved. its just a matter of time before we have 20 game regular seasons with no pre-season

If the NFLPA had a spine they would tell Roger there won’t be 18 games without 2 bye weeks.

Still wouldn’t be crazy about 18 games, already not crazy about 17. At a certain point the NFL regular season just gets kind of boring and injuries stack up.

I think the last 3 Super Bowls have been played on February 12 and 13.
Sooner or later this thing is going to hit Valentine's Day and there's going to be some conflict.

1. You better expand the roster for 18 games.
2. Need 2 bye weeks, and evenly spaced not something stupid like week 3 and week 8.

It was mathematically perfect at 16 games with 32 teams divided into 8, 4 team divisions. The fact they fricked that up the arse chasing money tells you all you need to know about Goodell and the owners.
With all of its issues, the NFL is still the best professional sports league on the planet but the margin is dwindling. It started with the pussification of the game to avoid CTE related lawsuits. And now, left unchecked, the hoarding/pursuit of wealth will eventually ruin it completely.
