In my experience if it’s a good restaurant and it’s a fair market price, the waiter will tell you. If it’s absurdly high they usually don’t which is ridiculous, as a former waiter one of your initial introductions should be to talk about the market priced items so people don’t have to ask.
I have a similar story, my Brother in law and wife were eating at a decent place with $40-60 meals about 6 months ago and they had a tomahawk steak on special. He didn’t ask, assuming it would be $70-90. Ended up being $130. Which in hindsight probably isn’t terrible for that size, but if you are running a special with a market priced item 2x the cost of anything else on the menu you really suck as a server not mentioning the cost.
