You're not far off. My friend's socialist nephew loves to argue his stupid points with us sometimes, and he has been on a warpath for universal income. The reason why? Robots are taking over the workplace.
The socialists want the robot invasion to take over so that they can use that to justify and influence people into supporting UI. They want people to get paid for just existing so that we can all be lazy shitstains living off the government and "rich peoples'" dime.

I've hit a few restaurant conventions in vegas. The robots have been on their way. Companies like Google that hoovered up a lot of robotics companies are poised to profit due to these changes

Yes, but more likely to create a bigger dependent underclass who can’t get a job saying “You want fries with that?” anymore.
