FYI: This is what the Terro bait is, borax and sugar. I use the bottled kind for sweet ants in the house. Just put a few drops on a piece of cardboard (I use little squares of cereal boxes) or plastic, and put it in the line or area the ants are in. The little bait stations they sell also work great.

If you have ants that are protein eaters you can mix a little olive oil with it. That would probably help even more with the fire ants. It just gives them more to eat and reason to keep coming back.
