Death wish: a countrywide 911 type of attack - even in small-town America. Hate to say it but that's the only thing that will do it.

I don't see that. I see a lot of people we have imported over the years as anti America and would cheer that.

How well do you remember 9/11?
We came together as a nation for about a whole month after 9/11. Things have only gotten more fractious since.

The only things I can see that would have this effect would be either a nuclear attack, or a national grid attack. The former may accomplish some temporary national unity, but the latter....well, let's just say I've seen the case study up close (Katrina) and a national grid collapse would be the immediate end of this nation.

I used to think that something of such a magnitude would be the catalyst to unite the nation. I now believe that many here would cheer for it. And rather than uniting, the finger pointing blame game would take center stage over a focus on unity with both sides blaming one another for allowing it. And of course the Dems would blame Trump.

I agree with you but I don’t believe anything could happen that would make the deranged left of today would unite under any circumstance
