The census data shows about ~9.5 million to post war ~3.5 million.

It's estimated that the total for european civilian deaths during WW2 was 15 million to 20 million. Add to that events like the holodomor, Stalin targeting jews (look up the "Rootless cosmopolitan" post ww2 campaign if you don't believe me), Stalin purged jews from government positions, exiled a large population of Jews to gulags.

This link has between 150,000 and 300,000 jews that fled Poland into the Soviet Union. We don't know if the Soviets counted all of these migrants in during a census. There were many other migratory events from Jewish minorities out of various European nations. All of this, and more, goes into that 6 million disappeared number. We just don't know and likely never will.
