Is it not correct that Collins and Chest were top 100 recruits as well? (At least by one ranking service).
Collins will be 4 years removed from those high school rankings that were largely based on a 17 year old who had great physical attributes. If he were in the portal this year would he be considered a "top 100" recruit?
And if you are talking about 4 top 100 "returning" players usually 2 of those would have more than 6 games combined at LSU. In the case of Chest and Collins, it is really two players who will basically be playing for LSU for the first time. I think they can both make contributions, but they are not established players.

This next year will rely on Ward, Reed, and Williams mostly, followed by how well Jordan Sears handles the point.

The real question mark is how good the rest of the SEC is. Alabama and Tennessee should be the best 2 teams. After that teams like Arkansas, Texas, and Kentucky can be excellent or disfunctional with all the turnover. You can even put Missouri and Ole Miss into the unpredictable category, but their ceiling is lower.

With Cook eligible for the entire non-conf. schedule last year LSU probably wins 2...MAYBE 3 more games.

You know, not so sure about that, Cook was a HUGE defensive liability and was largely benched for that and too much hero ball at inopportune times. I can recall multiple games where the team rallied with him on the bench.

I think they beat Nichols and Dayton with him. While he became more of a problem as SEC play wore on, he helped carry LSU for bit once he became eligible.

? I think we lost both of those games and I don't think he played in either.

I do know there were at least two games where we were down by huge deficits thanks in part to his horrific defense and unfortunate shot selection and we made fairly significant runs with him on the bench to get back in those games

.

I can recall maybe 3 games shortly after his joining the team where it seemed he was the guy we were hoping he would be. Adjustments were made by other teams, but not by him and I really didn't see that ever again.

I was saying that with him I think LSU would have beaten Nichols and Dayton.

There was a 3 game stretch before the Texas game where LSU's offense was awful: @ Syracuse, vs. Southeastern where they struggle to pull away, and vs. K-State. Cook's first game was vs. Texas. And he didn't come into that game until LSU was already down double-digits. He provided a little bit of juice for an offense that had otherwise been bad before that game. It carried over in to games vs. Lamar and NW St. While those victories weren't noteworthy, what was noteworthy is LSU dominated two inferior opponents whereas before they struggled to do so most of the season. Maybe not surprisingly (in hindsight) LSU unexpectedly won their first 2 SEC games.

The Auburn game was one of those. But then he rebounded to almost singlehandedly will LSU to a win @ Georgia on a night no one for LSU was playing well offensively. LSU was competitive @ Alabama for about 25:00, but it's hard to say the dropoff was all Cook's fault because NO ONE for LSU was playing defense in that game. He didn't play vs. Tennessee and the second Alabama was much of the same story (you don't give up 109 because only one guy plays bad defense. That's a team effort). He didn't start vs. Florida, but was instrumental in the 20 point comeback in the second half...until the brutal TO with 25 seconds to go and LSU only down 1. After that he didn't play again.

He ultimately wasn't the savior everyone thought he would be. But it's hard to argue his insertion in the line didn't give LSU a spark at a time it looked like they were on pace to be worse than last year. Even McMahon called LSU two different teams with and without him.

I do recall two critical trips with the game still in reach where he took two quick hero ball shots early in the clock and clanked them both and the game was pretty much over from there.

gotcha I was unclear on that.

The spark was short lived and soon became more of a problem.
