Why do people keep complaining about the costs of things and inflation, but they still feel the need to keep up with the Jones’?
Perhaps these folks feel hopeless and are living for the day and a moment of happiness.
The reality is a large portion of this country is fricked with no real future prospects as their wages will never increase in a meaningful way. Thus they say frick it and YOLO on the here and now.

It’s called doom spending.

Exactly how you guarantee that you will never retire or own anything of value.
I just turned 46, when I was poor and in my twenties, these are all things I did not buy for myself or do, because I wasn't making a lot of money and wanted to plan and save for my future:
- A new cellphone every two years
- Brunches with my friends
- More than a few cocktails out at the bars
- A gym membership
- A nice apartment and living by myself (had a roommate until I bought my condo)
- A relatively new car
- $5 coffees every day (in fact I never got those)
- Buying new clothes all the time
- Paying a lot to get my hair done/cut
- Taking taxis (now ubers) everywhere
- Taking expensive trips
Yet these are all things that many people nowadays consider must haves. That's fine but then shut the eff up about not having any money for other things.
Side note, young people today also do not appreciate the time value of money. Starting to put even a little bit away, consistently, when you start your career makes a HUGE difference.
