Playing the back tees = playing the back tees.
Very rarely people would go as far back as possible for the challenge. Never in a tournament, just recreationally. It was called the tips because it’s the tip of the tee box. It was a way to play a PGA distance on a local course.
Morons then stole the term tips and started calling the back tees the tips. You heard it from them, but it is wrong. Completely wrong.

The Houston kid hit his second shot in the water on 18. Had to go through the whole drop process. That is why it took so long.
