What's the story of this place? It seems to have one of the most peculiar set ups of any town I've ever seen, with its quaint little downtown area seemingly completely isolated on one side of the river and basically the entire rest of the town on the other.
How the heck did that come to be?
I don't really know the answer to the question, but Wetumpka has a pretty interesting history. It was first settled by white men when the French established Fort Toulouse in the early 1700s. It has withstood a lot of destruction and hardship from catastrophic fires, floods, war, and economic despair. I think initially there was "East Wetumpka" and "West Wetumpka." That could explain the weird layout.
