Villains are sometimes more frightening when you try to imagine what they would do with more power than what they actually do.

Hannibal Lecter is more interesting locked up in a cell. Jaws is scarier beneath the water. Ledger's Joker and (coincidentally) Spacey's John Doe are better with no backstory. Similarly, Frank Underwood is more menacing in his ascension to the presidency than actually being president. Should have ended with him banging on the Resolute Desk at the end of Season 2 (I think).

ETA: I watched all but the last season and enjoyed it overall. I checked out when Spacey got the boot.

This used to be my favorite show. I was obsessed with it. I watched every season, but I agree it goes downhill big time toward the end.

That’s a good angle.

Also I probably could have been more judicious in my first reply - yeah it’s not very excellent further past S2-3.
