They cannot contradict the judges instructions or "overrule" sustained objections, but they can help the jury understand the evidence and testimony within the confines of the charges and instructions.
In this case, they just need to be "not guilty" votes. No unanimity = no conviction and if the other jurors trust them, they'll likely fall in line and acquit.
