Do you think that's too much land to work? That looks like at least 9sq ft. I guess when they've fed all 500 people with the 3 sprigs of crabgrass they harvest they can trade with some local craftsman for other necessities...Like a shoe..

Sticks/branches are a cheap filler for above ground planters. I've seen people use them in planter boxes that are 24+ inches where they'll eventually decompose and plant root systems don't directly need that soil space.

I shouldn't need to point out why it's inappropriate/counter productive for their setup.

It makes perfect sense why communist countries always starve. One of the first things they always do is steal the property from farmers and often kill them, then they’ll say this is easy because if I can get a political science degree from some bullshite university, I can figure out how to shove shite in the ground and make it grow… and then they can’t and everyone starves.
