Do any of you guys have a teen training BJJ or MMA in Baton Rouge?

My son has done some wrestling and BJJ as a younger child and has now just finished two years of gymnastics (one year of team gymnastics with 20 hours a week of training). He is pretty strong with an iron grip.

From what I see the best options are probably JM Modern Ju Jitsu or the UFC gym. What do you guys think?

You’re going to get so many options based on what I can tell about BJJ. JM always appeared to have a huge following. And it’s in the same building as Agile Brewing right? So you can get beers while you wait.

He's been strictly body weight exercise for the last year. His cardio can improve for sure. As far as strength goes he can do about 30 pullups. He can also do one armed pull ups and push ups. He can dead hang for 3 minutes.

I'm really proud of him. I just want him to be able to fight if needs to and he wants to go into battle.

Look up Gracie United - Team Jucao. There's two gyms in Baton Rouge, along with other area gyms you would have access to as well in Prairieville, Walker, and Zachary. Good group of gyms to train with. They have huge in-house tournaments throughout the year where all of the affiliated gyms get together, which is great for kids and beginners. If he has previous BJJ and wrestling experience, it should come back pretty naturally to him.

Those gymnasts are jacked. And only about 15% of them gay, lol

My boy has a girl and he could probably kick your arse without any training

I have seen quite a few BJJ guys get their arse kicked in street fights, usually it was not a one on one deal. Not bashing it, but he might want to look into different styles as well.

To be fair, BJJ is not really a striking martial art unless you go to a school that has a picture of Helio Gracie on the wall that you bow to before class starts. With that being said, we do teach some limited striking along with a pretty good base of self-defense that will get you out of a bind in most situations. However, if you are getting into street fights with legit boxers or MMA guys, you are probably going home with an arse beating or worse. So, moral of the story is stay out of street fights even if you are a Black Belt in BJJ or take some boxing lessons as well.
